Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. A Research Impact Review prepared for English Heritage by the Landscape Group, University of East Anglia

2016 marks the 300th anniversary of Lancelot 'Capability Brown’ (1716-1783). He is arguably Britain’s best known landscape architect with over 200 commissions to his name and many of which are still enjoyed today and have been described as ‘England’s greatest contribution to the visual arts’. English Heritage is one of a host of partners developing a national Capability Brown 300 celebration and festival for 2016. The aims of the celebration and festival are to: •To celebrate Capability Brown as an artist and landscape designer •To encourage an increased number of people to visit, learn about and enjoy Brown’s landscapes •To encourage a greater appreciation of our designed landscape heritage Research, and especially a reliable list of landscapes designed by Brown, are key to the Capability Brown 300 festival and celebration in 2016 and its long term legacy. English Heritage commissioned University of East Anglia in 2013 to review the research carried out to date with the aim of stimulating a wider discussion about research needs and opportunities, and also to inform English Heritage's next National Heritage Protection Plan future applied research activity.
