Reasons for Designation

Wiveton War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

Historic interest:

* it is an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20.

Architectural interest:

* it is a well-detailed war memorial in the form of a Latin cross.

Group value:

* it has group value with the Church of St Mary (Grade I) and a row of memorial stones (Grade II).

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on the communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead: therefore the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.

One such memorial was raised at Wiveton as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. The date of its construction and unveiling is not clear, but its design conforms to the style commonly erected in the 1920s. The memorial stands in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary (listed at Grade I). Inside the church are framed memorials to six people from the parish who fell in the First World War and to one who fell in the Second World War.

A war memorial of probable 1920s date.

MATERIALS: constructed of stone.

DESCRIPTION: comprising a Latin cross with mouldings on a slender tapering octagonal shaft with stop-chamfers on a three-tiered octagonal base. The sides of the base are inscribed with the details of the fallen and with an extract translated from the Dies irae - Requiem Mass: LORD ALL PITYING/ JESU BLEST,/ GRANT THEM THINE/ ETERNAL REST.
