30.7.59 The Tithe Barn GV I

Tithe Barn early C14 built for Abbey of Evesham. Blue lias stone with Cotswold stone dressings and stone tile roof. 136 ft long, 30 ft wide and 40 ft high. Originally 2 large projecting gabled cart entrances on South side and to smaller gabled rear entrances. Only the Western pair, front and rear survive. Coped gables with ornate clover-leaf finials, 2 original, 2 copies. Central buttresses to end gables, buttresses between bays and long ventilating loops. Eleven bays, 8 large raised base crucks carrying upper collar-and-tie-beam trusses. At each end an aisled bay with collar-and-tie-beam truss carried on aisle post. Triple purlin roof. Wind bracing throughout. Attached at each end C19 additions of minor interest; at West end L-plan stable range with small barn attached, half-hipped plain tile roof; at East end a low slate roofed range coming forward with 2-storey barn attached.
