Chapel. Dated 1842. By HF Lockwood. Painted stucco with hipped slate roof. Classical revival style. Plinth, string course, moulded cornice and blocking. Rusticated east front has 4 giant Greek pilasters, entablature and pediment. Central stained-glass window flanked by 8-panel double doors with overlights, all with pilastered surrounds and cornices. In front, a large sculpture of Oceanus reclining, 1828 by Thomas Earle. This was removed from the Trinity Almshouses and resited here in 1934. West front has rusticated ground floor and a central corniced portico with paired Greek pilasters flanking a pilastered doorcase with a pair of 8-panel doors and overlight. Above, a Diocletian window with moulded surround and keystone. INTERIOR has a square central space with Corinthian pilasters, dentillated cornice and ribbed groin vault, with a Diocletian window to north and south, each with a stained-glass coat of arms. To east, a coffered apse framed by Corinthian pilasters, with a stained-glass east window, 1840, by M Stangroom, flanked by Corinthian columns. On either side, a moulded doorcase and cornice ornamented with seahorses, with a curved 6-panel door. At the west end, a coffered barrel vault with Diocletian window, flanked by 2 flat ceilings on Corinthian square columns. Under the vault, a panelled wooden gallery with 2 wooden columns. On either side, a 12-pane sash. At the rear, a pair of 6-panel doors. Western entrance lobby has a wooden cantilever stair with winders and cast-iron lotus balustrade. Moulded panelled doors. Fittings include an altar table from the former chapel c1770, with a polygonal marble slab supported by a gilt eagle, by Sir William Chambers. Double deck square oak pulpit. early C19 organ. C20 stalls with shaped armrests. Box pews. Monuments include a facsimile of the Ferres Monument from Holy Trinity (qv), and a tablet.
