After making several visits to the north of England and noting the wealth of 16th and 17th century houses around Burnley and Colne; Sarah Pearson, a member of staff of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England embarked on a private study of these buildings. After agreeing that the study would make a suitable volume for the newly launched Supplementary Series, RCHME became involved in the latter stages of the project. The project resulted in the publication 'Rural Houses of the Lancashire Pennines 1560 to 1760' (RCHME 1985).
