This photograph was taken for Dame Mary Russell, Duchess of Bedford, who converted part of Woburn Abbey in to a military hospital during the First World War. The ward which is described as 'open air' in the Bedford Lemere daybook has large open windows on one side of the room. Open-air treatment was used in the early 20th century for both injuries and infectious diseases.
